For the series premiere of “The Vampire Diaries” spin-off, “The Originals,” fans got a remix of the backdoor pilot that aired last season on the parent series. While the episode last season focused on Klaus’ experiences in New Orleans, we were treated to Elijah’s point of view for this premiere. There were plenty of overlapping moments, but it was an effective device as Elijah proved he could be a compelling lead character in a series.
Of course, all of that was put into question by the end of the hour. After Elijah helped him secure a deal with the new vampire leader of New Orleans, Marcel, Klaus made a fateful decision. Once again, he daggered his brother.
“I have realized one massive vulnerability, one weakness, that Marcel could exploit,” Klaus told Elijah. “You.”
Once again, Klaus believes that family makes you weak. He doesn’t care so much about his unborn child as he does in trying to take all that Marcel has built for himself in New Orleans. Perhaps, it will be their sister Rebekah’s inevitable arrival that will free Elijah from Klaus’ treachery.
Entertainment Weekly’s Mandi Bierly was hoping the daggering doesn’t stick. “This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Klaus dagger Elijah after Elijah came to his rescue (if you’re a ‘TVD’ fan),” she wrote. “But it made me gasp. Partly because I don’t want to see [actor Daniel] Gillies sidelined for any period of time. Partly because… no, that’s pretty much it. Fix this, Rebekah. And quick.”
“The Vampire Diares” spin-off, ‘The Originals,” continues on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW, conveniently after new episodes of “The Vampire Diaries.”
