Quentin Tarantino Wishes Ben Affleck Luck On Batman Role, But Finds Character Not 'Interesting'

Because everything on the internet apparently comes back to Ben Affleck playing Batman, a French-language magazine asked Oscar-winning screenwriter and renowned director Quentin Tarantino to offer his thoughts on the Batfleck casting.

“I have to admit that I don’t really have an opinion,” Tarantino reportedly told Les Inrockuptibles (article not online, but a translation was provided by Indiewire’s The Playlist). “Why? Because Batman is not a very interesting character. For any actor. There is simply not much to play. I think Michael Keaton did it the best, and I wish good luck to Ben Affleck. But, you know who would have made a great Batman? Alec Baldwin in the ’80s.”

Tarantino isn’t the first high-profile name to dismiss Batman as a character. Here’s what Matt Damon said about Affleck’s job as the Caped Crusader in an interview with the Times of India back in August:

“I think it will be great. It will be terrific. I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman!” Damon said. “[That’s] certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw ‘Argo’ or ‘The Town,’ and all the work he’s been doing lately, it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people. Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that.”

Tarantino, fortunately, didn’t limit his interview to just Batman. He also spoke to Les Inrockuptibles about his list of favorite 2013 movies, including why he named “The Lone Ranger” among the year’s best. Head to The Playlist for more.
