Keanu Reeves On 'Bill & Ted 3': 'There's Darkness Out There That's Keeping It From Happening'

Not excellent: In an interview with MTV, Keanu Reeves revealed that plans for “Bill and Ted 3” have hit a rough patch.

“It’s a long story,” Reeves told MTV’s Josh Horowitz at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. “There’s lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories. There’s a whole thing […] I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn’t happened yet, because it’s pretty dark out there.”

Continued Reeves: “There’s darkness out there that’s keeping it from happening. It’s not winning right now. It’s that part of the story where it’s looking grim. It’s the dark period!”

That wasn’t always the case. Back in August, Reeves said that he was waiting to see another draft of the script, which original writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson are putting together. Last year, meanwhile, he told GQ about a potential “Bill and Ted 3” plot.

“One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world,” Reeves said. “And they haven’t done it. So everybody is kind of like: ‘Where is the song?’ The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future ‘us’ refuses to tell us, and another future ‘us’ blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life. In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.”
